PRETTY PICTURE SUNDAY

RAIN ... 99 DAYS ... RAIN

It started raining midday yesterday, and while it never rained hard, it continued until sunset or so, totaling .4 inches. Working outside, pruning yucca and reconnecting our cistern, I would've preferred it didn't rain... under normal circumstances.

But this dry season has been abnormal, so yesterday, I didn't mind getting a little wet as we'd not seen any significant rain for 99 days, the driest stretch we've ever experienced here, part of the driest stretch Ecuador has seen in 61 years.

The lack of rain has resulted in numerous fires, not only in our area but around the country, including within Quito's city limits. Earlier this week, firefighters put out a large blaze near Vilcabamba, only to see others pop up nearby.

While we could see the fires and the smoke from our property, they were never a threat to us, but they were to others up the valley and the firefighters battling the blaze... blazes. It's been a long, dry, dry season for them.

So you can imagine their relief with yesterday's rain... but you don't have to because here's a photo of four firefighters in Capemaco (a Vilcabamba 'suburb') as the rains came yesterday afternoon. The photo says it all...
